Storyboard - Animated:

Storyboard:

This is our storyboard, we worked together to decide which shots worked best and which would make it most effective. We decided to use a range of shots from close ups to long shots. Even though the drawings aren't of the best quality, they accurately show what we are going to do when reaching the day of filming. To develop our storyboard more, we could add in a soundtrack to show the horror genre in a better way and make it clear what genre we were aiming towards.

Documenting Of Influences On Production:

Documenting Of Influences On Production:

Whilst finding ideas and themes creating our opening scene, we have been inspired on the way. The horror that inspired us the most is Wes Craven, the director of Scream (1996). Scream's opening scene builds up a huge amount of tension, which gives Craven the advantage the scare the audience at any time he wants. Specific shots that Craven cleverly uses allow a distorted view into the background, giving the audience the idea that something is going to jump out unexpectedly, but to create even more suspense, nothing happens. Techniques like this is something we hope to incorporate in certain shots in our work to make it more authentic and thrilling for the audience.

Relevant Online Tutorials And Comment:

Relevant Online Tutorials And Comment:

The actor who is going to be playing our victim will need to stand out and look the part, we are going to do this by looking into make up tutorials which will help us improve our skills with make up. We want her to have a natural look  to make it seem like she is walking home from school and she is looking like she does everyday. In this clip the girl curls her hair, we are not to bothered about the victim having her hair curled and we want it to seem as realistic as possible and by having her hair curled suggests that she would be trying a bit to hard to fit in with the school girl look. The products in which we are most likely to use are: powder, blusher, brozer and foundation. The eyes will be a natural everyday look.

Practice Titles Created And Uploaded- Font research:

Font Research:

For another part of the research for our opening scene we had to choose opening titles, this is very hard to try and find the perfect one to fit our film and the genre that goes with it. To help us out we looked at different titles from films which had the same genre to us and we analysed them, our favourite one out of the three was 'The Conjuring' even though it is simple it still gives of an eerie, creepy effect which we think the audience will be interested in. The background allows the title to stand out and doesn't give anything away to what the film is actually about, it also doesn't show if the film is going to be terrifying which would draw the audience in.

Our second favourite was 'The Cabin in Woods' as a group we decided that it was effective and the big to small font made it really refined and the wood looking texture makes the audience think that the place it is set in is going to be a woods or a shed. This would encourage the audience to watch it because the title does not give much away. There are also faint scratch marks sliced across the title suggesting something in the film is going to hurt people with something, this would also encourage the audience to watch the film as it comes across mysterious. The little details make the title stand out and this is what we are looking for in our title.

This is another title we looked into but is our least favourite, the reason it isn't as appealing to us as the other two is because it has a lot going on in it whereas the other two are simple but they seem to have more of an effect. It also does not fit in with what we want to have on our title as we want plain dark background which brings out the font. Although it doesn't fit to our requirements if our plan doesn't work then this would be our next option.

The fonts we found which went the best with our film were these two below: the reason they go so well with our opening scene is because they are simple and don't take to much away from the effect of the background and it also gives the effect that they are eerie and it does not give the audience any indication to what the film is going to be about and how scary it is going to be. We decided that the 'Felix Titling' is the best one for our film as we believe 'The Conjuring' is the most effective out of the three examples we have above and the Felix is the one which is the most similar. The 'Perpetua Titling' is bold and stands out and is very similar to 'The Cabin In The Woods' which is the second favourite out of the three, so if the 'Felix Titling' does not work then we will try this one.

Representing And Stereotyping In Our Film:

Representing and Stereotyping in our film:

In the opening two minutes of our film we have used very stereotypical features from horror films to make it achieve the best possible outcome. By linking our version of a horror film to other horror films we know have been very successful. We have used stereotypes such as the main character who will be played by 'Charlotte Weston' is a young school girl who is walking home, she wants to take a shorter route so she leaves her friends and she goes on her own through the woods. Already the audience will be able to tell that by her going off on her own she is vulnerable and she shouldn't be walking through a dull woods on her own. The reason we have chosen to use a young girl as stereo-typically she is at more risk than if it was a boy because he would most likely be able to look after himself and the audience wouldn't be as worried which isn't the reaction we want. We have chosen a man as the antagonist because stereo-typically they have more power over a young girl and would have the strength to grab her. This would also grab the audience's attention because they would see the man approaching her but to start with she doesn't realise and they would want to carry on watching, which i believe makes a successful horror film.

Shot List For Our Film:

Shot List:

In our opening two minutes of our film we will be using a range of different shots to make the two minutes effective and stand out. We are going to achieve this by using a variety of shots, such as:

Long shots:
This will make the setting stand out and the audience will get a clear understanding of where the scene is set. Usually a film starts with a long shot to show the setting.

Over the shoulder shot:
To make the surroundings also stand out we will do an over the shoulder shot so you can see what the main actor is looking at and it will put the audience into her position and cause tension. When we have the villain standing across the road waiting for the antagonist this audience will connect with emotions she is feeling.

Medium shots:
This shot can be very effective because it can show two characters in one shot and you can feel the feelings between both of them within a few seconds.

Close ups:
This shot is effective because you can focus heavily on the emotions of the characters and identify their mood. It also blurs out everything in the background just to focus on the face which gives the best effect on the audience.

Extreme close up:
This shot is very similar to close up shots but usually the extreme close up fits the whole frame so you can see every detail of the object or face. For example if the camera is focusing specifically on the eyes this is done to create tension or sadness of the image.

Extreme long shot:
An extreme long shot is done to establish the scene and mood. This has a good effect on the audience because it creates tension as you can be looking at everything all the time so it may suggest that something is going to jump out on you.

High angle shot:
This has a very good impact on the audience as it again shows the emotions in the face or shows detail on an object. It is also very similar to a birds eye view but instead on using a helicopter, a crane is used to elevate the camera and focuses on filming something on the ground.

Low angle shot:
Low angle shots are filmed at ground level and are normally used when filming action scenes. This type of shot would be used if someone has gone from walking through the corridor and then going down the stairs or jumping from one building to another.

Romance Analysis - Titanic:

Romance Analysis:
(opening two minutes)

(Titanic)

The opening scene to Titanic sets the scene really well and straight away you can see that it is going to be a sad film. The setting is dark and the song is sad, you can hear a female character humming the song which is very well known and you can tell that it comes from Titanic. You get a close up of the ship and the audience would be able to tell that it is a big occasion as you can see people waving it off and they look excited. The shot then fades out and you get an over the shoulder shot from a young boy who is wearing a cap, also next to him you can see a man with an old fashioned camera which suggests they have got people here to record this special occasion. There is then a close up of different people on the ship who is waving to the crowd who have gathered up to watch it leave for the first time. The colouring in the clip is brown and hasn't been filmed in very good quality which suggests that it is old and have taken it with an old camera suggesting that there is another camera behind the other one which again shows that it is very exciting. The audience may be thinking that they have made it go back into the past and are showing you what was happening when the ship was leaving because of the poor quality. Then is then a close up of the people on the boat again and you can see that all the people which are being filmed are all rich because of what they are wearing, the men are wearing top hats and suits and the women are wearing dressing and hats.

There is then a long shot of the sea at night and it seems calm and there is a reflection from the moon which is making the sea seem peaceful and the audience's opinions would now change and think the film is going to be full of romance, although they are wrong and for people who know the story know it isn't going to work out like that. The title is then put across the sea in big font and it is white which is meant to resemble the moon which makes it effective and in the background the waves are peacefully moving in the background.

There is then an unfocused blue light coming towards the camera which straight away the audience think it is the ship, but as it gets closer you can see that they are smaller boats which look like they are looking for something which will make the audience wonder what is going on and what they are looking for. You get a birds eye view of the sea with the blue lights searching. The reason you can tell they are looking for something is because they look like they are lost and they are driving very slowly. It then fades out and the blue lights focus out.

Certificate Research - U:

Certificate Research

The U symbol stands for universal. A U film is suitable for audiences aged four years and older. It can sometimes affect the child depending on what film it is or if the child is emotionally stable. In films which are listed as U are only allowed very infrequent use of mild language such as 'danm' and 'hell'.

Characters may be seen kissing or cuddling and there be references to sexual behavior but it is very unlikely and you would be able to tell what it would be like before you saw the film, such as in a trailer and the parents or careers know what their child is able to handle.

Certificate Research - 12A - 12:

Certificate Research:

Films, video games, videos or being able to by these things which as classified as 12A means that the child. To help a content may involve material that is not suitable for child who are 12 or under unless accompanied by an adult and then in which case should decide whether they think the child will be able to handle it.

The difference between 12 and 12A is that 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. It is very important when it comes to ageing in films because it can be so serious that the staff at the cinema could loose their license if an adult is not with a child under the age of 12.
The 12A rating is only used for films shown in cinemas.

The 12 rating is only found on videos and DVDs. no one younger than 12 may rent or by a DVD which is rated 12 and may be asked for ID. The 12A and 12 rated films are very similar and exactly the same rules are meant to be obeyed. The theme which is generally in these films are mature but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.
The language can sometimes involves swearing (e.g. f***) but must be very infrequent. Nudity is also allowed but it must be brief and discreet. Sex can be suggested.

Certificate Research - PG:

Certificate Research:

PG stands for Parental Guidance, this means a film is suitable for general viewing but you must have someone over the age of 16 to be with you who is acting like a parent figure, such as someone who is looking after you for the day, an older sibling or other family members. Some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older. Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger or children who are known to be sensitive.

Certificate Research - 18:

Certificate Research:

The 18 certificate is given by the British Board of film classification to state that in its opinion it is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18 years. This is supported through games, videos and films and can not be purchased by anyone under the age of 18 because it could be very violent or scary and not be suitable for that age group. Typical reasons why it is restricted from people under the age of 18 is because it could show scenes of hard drug, supernatural horror, explicit sec, sexual violence and violence such as murder which could be very graphic.

The reason i have not chosen to put my film in this category is because i don't think it would appeal to many people and the audience wouldn't be big enough.

Certificate Research - 15

Certificate Research:

The 15 certificate is given this age rating because the British Board of film classification state that is in their opinion that if a film is not suitable for the ages under 15 then they should not be watching it. This can include films, video recording, or game which should not be seen or purchased by anyone under the age of 15 years old.

The reason this is a good age range for games and films is because it has a big audience because children under the age of 15 would most likely be too scared to watch a horror film and may not enjoy it where as 15 years plus would.
For my film i have chosen to use this age range as the certificate age group because i think it gives the film more of an opportunity to be watched. I believe if i put it in the 18 category then it would be restricted from a bigger audience, also i am not making the film that horrific so it will be suitable for a 15 year old.

Columbia Pictures was founded in 1918, but it is currently under the operation of Sony Pictures Entertainment. When it first came out it wasn't very successful in Hollywood but it have now worked it way up and has succeeded. The films which stand out are 'Spider-man' and the recent 'James Bond' series which has been a big hit.

Throughout the years, Columbia Pictures have produced successful films such as'Spider Man' and '21 Jump Street' and they have all sold well and stood out from the crowd

They have also become very popular and a lot of people are talking about their success as they have now opened a theme park in Orlando, Florida. Interviewing the Villain:

Interviewing the Villain:

The actor that we are hoping to play the villain in our opening horror film is Callum Kent. As he achieved an A in his two year Drama GCSE course we think that his skills and talents are needed and will be appreciated when filming our opening scene. Callum's specialities are being able to adjust into any character when given and being able to stay in that role for a long time. He is independent, but can work well in a team which is something we will value when filming together.

Callum has many experiences in acting during his two year Drama course, he has taken part in many group plays and has taken a lot of responsibility as the main character role. By Callum playing our antagonist he will have to use a lot of creepy and scary body language to present the character successfully. He would achieve this by using awkward and creepy facial and body expressions to make him look powerful and match the conventions of a horror villain. We are hoping to study tutorials on what makeup we can also use to make him look as close to a creepy villain as possible.

Feedback from our questionnaire:

Feedback from our questionnaire:

We asked a range of people to fill out our questionnaire and we feel like we now have enough information to start being more creative with our film. We now have more confidence to go further with our film now we know what the audience want to see happen.
This is what found out:

What is your gender?
- Male 50%
- Female 50%
We wanted to make sure we had a balanced argument so decided to ask an equal amount of both male and females so it was a fair test.

What is your age?
- 10-12 2%
- 13-15 41%
- 16-17 50%
- 18+ 7%
Most of the people that took the questionnaire were aged from 16-17 because we are hoping to make the certificate rating of our film a 15 to maximize our audience. We wanted to get as many people from the ages of 15 or higher.

What elements in a horror scare you the most?

- Darkness 13%
- Fear of the Unknown 45%
- Eerie Music 25%
- 'Jump' moments 10%
- Death scenes 5%
- Chase scenes 2%
- Other (Please Specify)
From this we can focus more on how to build the suspense to scare our viewers. We can also study more on the music for our film and how to create 'jump moments' to thrill our audience. The results were what we expected and will be able to think of a lot of creative ideas from this.

Where is the most effective location for a horror to be set?
- A domestic setting 20%
- A rural setting e.g forests 44%
- In a house 36%
From this information we can situate our location in a rural location as it was the most popular choice, it will add to the building up of tension as it is not a relatable scene.

Do you want to be frightened when watching a horror film?
- Yes 75%
- No 25%
The information suggests that we should be scaring our audience during our opening scene, to do this we should incorporate more 'jump' moments. the results were as we expected as they match the typical conventions of a horror film.

What trait do you value most in a horror antagonist?
- Creepy 35%
- Violent 14%
- Ugly 12%
- Possessed 39%
We could focus on making our antagonist a creepy or possessed character to add an exciting plot to our film, my choosing the most popular choice it can maximise the amount of viewers we have. Making our character possessed is going to be a lot more complicated; we do not have the money to create such amazing effects to make it obvious that our antagonist is possessed. Because of this, we are probably going to move in the direction of a creepy antagonist which is the second most popular and will be just as effective.

What type of non-diegetic sounds do enjoy most from a horror(soundtrack)?
- High pitched 55%
- Dramatic music when reaching the climax 30%
- No sound 15%
When deciding our choice of soundtrack, we could lean towards music that is high pitched and gets louder creating a dramatic effect, the results were as we expected and we are looking forward to using a lot of  scary and unnerving types of sounds.

Research Into Target Audience For Horror:

Target Audience:
(Horror Genre)

We have decided to are going to be hooked and wont be able to stop watching. base our film idea on a typical horror film, we think that by doing this the audience

A horror films target audience is generally aimed at the age groups 15-25 because an older audience may be too scared and if they have families it may make them concerned and feel venerable and they may think their family is going to be at risk. The reason it is not for a younger audience is because they would be to anxious and may not be able to handle the terror. It is mostly aimed at men as they are more likely to be able to interact with the characters on screen. Women can interact with those on screen to but they would tend to react differently but some women like the thrill of horror films.
The women are most likely to go with someone else such has a boyfriend so they don't feel as scared, his is more likely to be either very close but not married couples or first date couples.

From the research I found from the Pearl and Dean website is that 53% women and 47% men went to see to see the horror film 'Insidious' suggesting that the results came out pretty much the same. This shows that both genders like horror films this can be targeted to people in relationships because they will need each others comfort and support during the film.

Analysed Openings From The Horror Genre:

Analysed Openings From The Horror Genre:

The Conjuring:

The scene starts with tense, upbeat music making the audience scared before it even starts. This suggests that the film is going to be horrifying throughout. The 'Warner Bro's' is shown but it doesn't look like the usual one and it is scary looking. You get a close up The 'Warner Bro's' symbol as it comes throwing towards the camera. The music throughout carries on upbeat and the lighting is very dark. 'New Line Cinema' is then shown with a background which is dark and has black clouds covering it, this suggests that it is going to be a successful film as it has popular production teams.

The screen goes black and all you can see is darkness and hear people talking, this suggests someone is watching and listening to them. They are talking about something in which she has heard, this straight away would draw the audience in as they would think that something may jump out. The shot then immediately goes to an extreme close up of a dolls eye and she has dried blood on her face. The camera begins to focus out and you can still hear the people talking about whats happened, the audience would be on the edge of their seats with terror as they want to know how a doll is alive and has blood on her. The camera then goes to a close up of the three people who are talking, they look scared as if something has shocked them. They seem as if they are in trouble for doing something and you get a close up of the women face as she looks at the other people, you can see the anger but also the fear in her eyes. 'A five year old girl had died in this apartment' this would catch the attention of the audience as they would want to know what this   has to do with the doll and why the three people are so scared. 'She was lonely and all she wanted was to be friends' again also would make the audience think why would a five year old be on her own and lonely. It also suggests that she would have most likely have been taught that she shouldn't talk to strangers. 'We can her permission to move into the doll' this would show that they were only trying to help but at the same time they have made their lives a lot worse.

The scene then changes to a different surrounding and it shows a long shot of two people entering their house. On the floor there is a note that says 'miss me' painted in red, the camera then goes to a long shot of the stairs and on the stairs there is a doll laying there still. The room is very dark and you can only see the outline of the people walking into the house and there is a faint light reflecting onto the doll. They said they left her in the spare room when they left home and she had moved on her own. This would scare the audience and want to know why the doll is doing it. Then camera then goes to a close up of the frightened lady and there is a bright light on her face to show her expression clearly. The music is very upbeat and she opens a door slowly as it creeks open.

Saw:

The scene starts with thunder and green, dark colours in the background suggesting it is raining and it is dull outside. It goes dark for two seconds and it shows the production team 'LOINS GATE' this suggests that the film again is going to be successful. It shows a black screen and 'twisted pictures' comes up and it is tangled in barbed wire and a spear comes flying down the middle suggesting there is going to be anger in the film. It twists up the barbed wire and there is thunder sounds in the background. There is a close up shot of a man with a light blue light reflected on his face and there seems to be a necklace with a light flouting over the top and in the background all you can hear is water suggesting he is under water. This would instantly draw in the audience as they would want to know why he under water in the dark. Then the camera shows a close up on the plug which is keeping the water in, it seems rusty and dirty.

Again the camera goes into a close up of his face and he looks like he is struggling for air. He then opens his eyes and breaths in with shock and bubbles come out of his mouth, suggesting he doesn't want to be there and he can't breath. He shakes and water goes everywhere, you get a close up of his foot trying to pull the plug out and he looks like he is struggling and loosing his strength. He manages to pull it out and as he does it the camera shows a long shot of the rusty bath that he is in and the audience then sees that he is held down with chains and he can't move. He begins to get angry and all the audience can hear is chains being moved. There is then a close up of the rusty plug and you see the water slowly going down and the water looks dirty. The little light goes down the hole and as soon as it happens he is attached to chains anymore and get out of the dirty bath and is standing in a bathroom which looks cold and not looked after. He is bent over and it looks like he hasn't been able to walk for a long time.

Analysing The Romance Film "Dear John":

Romance Analysis:
(opening two minutes)

(Dear John)

The scene starts with a close shot of the main actor from the side, this gives the effect that he is looking at someone or something and is trying to take in as much detail a possible. In the background you can hear someone talking and laughing and that is when he looks over at something and the audience would assume he is admiring her suggesting he is attracted to her but she doesn't know. You can see the scene is set someone sunny suggesting he is on holiday as he hasn't got a top on and he is looking very relaxed, the non-diegetic music also gives the effect that this film is going to be romantic. You then get an over the shoulder shot and the camera focuses on the girl and the audience can see she is with another girl and two boys suggesting they are on a double date, which the audience will automatically think the film is going to be a love twist.

The shot then goes back to him and focuses on his face to try and understand his mood and his feelings towards her. You get a panning shot to show the speed the bag is going and this shows that a lot of what was in there was important as she has it with her, suggesting it would be her phone, purse and all the other things she needed. The long shot of the man running along the peer shows he is trying to impress her, the girl gasps with shock and she has lost all her important possessions. You get a close up shot of the girl and you can see the worry in her face as the bag is falling and he is risking his life just for that. The shot then cuts to the man in the water trying to grab the bag and then a medium shot of the man who pushes up from the ground up to shore. Throughout the whole scene the man has stayed calm and hasn't panicked and to jump of the pier shows he is going to be the hero in the film. The audience also may find humor in this opening scene as when Brandon stands by the sea as he was running to get the bag, John walks out with the bag before he has even touched the water. This suggests that its him wimpy friend.

As John walks up as gives the girl the bag, a close up shot is used of the girl running towards him thanking him. As both main characters meet for the first time it is a medium shot throughout, in the background you see Brandon still out of breath which would be funny to the audience and suggest the film may include some humorous parts. Throughout the conversation shot reverse shot is used between Savannah and john the two main characters. The next shot is then a high angle shot of Savannah walking next to John, the shot follows them walking to capture the relationship between the two characters and from the opening two minutes you can already see a romance building between the two.
