Analysed Openings From The Horror Genre:
The Conjuring:
The scene starts with tense, upbeat music making the audience scared before it even starts. This suggests that the film is going to be horrifying throughout. The 'Warner Bro's' is shown but it doesn't look like the usual one and it is scary looking. You get a close up The 'Warner Bro's' symbol as it comes throwing towards the camera. The music throughout carries on upbeat and the lighting is very dark. 'New Line Cinema' is then shown with a background which is dark and has black clouds covering it, this suggests that it is going to be a successful film as it has popular production teams.
The screen goes black and all you can see is darkness and hear people talking, this suggests someone is watching and listening to them. They are talking about something in which she has heard, this straight away would draw the audience in as they would think that something may jump out. The shot then immediately goes to an extreme close up of a dolls eye and she has dried blood on her face. The camera begins to focus out and you can still hear the people talking about whats happened, the audience would be on the edge of their seats with terror as they want to know how a doll is alive and has blood on her. The camera then goes to a close up of the three people who are talking, they look scared as if something has shocked them. They seem as if they are in trouble for doing something and you get a close up of the women face as she looks at the other people, you can see the anger but also the fear in her eyes. 'A five year old girl had died in this apartment' this would catch the attention of the audience as they would want to know what this has to do with the doll and why the three people are so scared. 'She was lonely and all she wanted was to be friends' again also would make the audience think why would a five year old be on her own and lonely. It also suggests that she would have most likely have been taught that she shouldn't talk to strangers. 'We can her permission to move into the doll' this would show that they were only trying to help but at the same time they have made their lives a lot worse.
The scene then changes to a different surrounding and it shows a long shot of two people entering their house. On the floor there is a note that says 'miss me' painted in red, the camera then goes to a long shot of the stairs and on the stairs there is a doll laying there still. The room is very dark and you can only see the outline of the people walking into the house and there is a faint light reflecting onto the doll. They said they left her in the spare room when they left home and she had moved on her own. This would scare the audience and want to know why the doll is doing it. Then camera then goes to a close up of the frightened lady and there is a bright light on her face to show her expression clearly. The music is very upbeat and she opens a door slowly as it creeks open.

Saw:
The scene starts with thunder and green, dark colours in the background suggesting it is raining and it is dull outside. It goes dark for two seconds and it shows the production team 'LOINS GATE' this suggests that the film again is going to be successful. It shows a black screen and 'twisted pictures' comes up and it is tangled in barbed wire and a spear comes flying down the middle suggesting there is going to be anger in the film. It twists up the barbed wire and there is thunder sounds in the background. There is a close up shot of a man with a light blue light reflected on his face and there seems to be a necklace with a light flouting over the top and in the background all you can hear is water suggesting he is under water. This would instantly draw in the audience as they would want to know why he under water in the dark. Then the camera shows a close up on the plug which is keeping the water in, it seems rusty and dirty.
Again the camera goes into a close up of his face and he looks like he is struggling for air. He then opens his eyes and breaths in with shock and bubbles come out of his mouth, suggesting he doesn't want to be there and he can't breath. He shakes and water goes everywhere, you get a close up of his foot trying to pull the plug out and he looks like he is struggling and loosing his strength. He manages to pull it out and as he does it the camera shows a long shot of the rusty bath that he is in and the audience then sees that he is held down with chains and he can't move. He begins to get angry and all the audience can hear is chains being moved. There is then a close up of the rusty plug and you see the water slowly going down and the water looks dirty. The little light goes down the hole and as soon as it happens he is attached to chains anymore and get out of the dirty bath and is standing in a bathroom which looks cold and not looked after. He is bent over and it looks like he hasn't been able to walk for a long time.
